In the play Trifles, by Susan Glaspell, the male characters make several assumptions concerning the female characters. These assumptions deal with the way in which the male characters see the female characters, on a purely stereotypical, gender-related level. The stereotypical assumptions made are those of the women being concerned only with trifling things, loyalty to the feminine gender, and of women being subservient to their spouses. The first assumption, women being only concerned with trifling things, is seen in the beginning where the men say Sheriff Well, can you beat the woman! Held for murder and worryin? about her preserves. The women are betrayed as if they are second class citizens with nothing more important to think about, except to take care of the medial household chores like cooking, cleaning, and sewing. Only in their own eyes men believe they have significant jobs to perform and relevant thoughts in their head.

Susan Glaspells Trifles explores male-female relationships through the murder investigation of the character of Mr. Wright. The play takes place in Wrights country farmhouse as the men of the play, the county attorney, the sheriff, and Mr. Hale, search for evidence as to the identity and, most importantly, the motive of the murderer. However, the clues which would lead them to such are never found by the men. Instead it is their female counterparts who discover the evidence needed, and who are able to do so because of their gender. The male investigators need to find, as Mrs. Peters puts it, a motive; something to show anger, or--sudden feeling. Yet the men never see the uneven sewing on a quilt Minnie Wright was working on before the murder. The quilt is a

symbol of Minnies agitation--her anger. The men, though, laugh at the womens wondering about the quilt. To them it is of little importance. Likewise, the bird and its cage are easily dismissed.

Importantly, these constant attacks on women are what keep Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale from revealing any of the evidence they had found. This information, which should prove to be essential to the case is quickly put aside and appears to be unimportant because it was given by a woman. While the men went upstairs to look for the evidence, both ladies went about the kitchen observing everything. As Mrs. Peters looks in a cupboard, she finds an empty birdcage. Mrs. Hale begins to explain to her that about a year before Mr. Wright?s unfortunate death there had been a man selling canaries at a very low price. This would explain where Mrs. Wright had gotten the birdcage, yet it didn?t say why one of the hinges on the door was broken. Canaries are bright yellow in color, flutter their wings in their cage while chirping cheerful sounds. Being an admirer of complete and utter silence, it is obvious that Mr. Wright went on a rampage and put an end to the only thing left that was full of life and happiness in the house. ?No, Mr. Wright wouldn?t like the bird ? a thing that sang. She used to sing. He killed that, too?, explained Mrs. Hale. After finding the strangled bird, she takes it and places it in her scissor box and wraps the lifeless canary in her finest and most expensive material. This heartless deed finally inspires her to put an end to her suffering and repression. Eye for an eye is exactly what was going through her mind.

The bird?s cage was ?Minnie Foster?s jail. The bird?s death was her freedom for the fate of the bird was the fate of her husband. John was discovered with a rope tied around his neck, the freedom of a women who could no longer be held down. This was the first implementation of women?s power in the story. Susan Glaspell?s play, Trifles, seems to describe the ultimate women?s

suffrage story. No longer will men have an upper hand against women after reading this story. Cleverness will be the key to retaining power from the men. The one thing that woman are criticized for, the idea that women tend to look at the ?little picture? instead of the ?whole picture?, will be there path to victory.

In conclusion, the role of men verse women portrayed in this story finally drew the consequence. In no way would these women allow themselves to be mocked. At the end of the story, the county Attorney asked if they had found out what Mrs. Wright was to do with quilt, the women mockingly claimed that she was going to ?knot? it. The men who claimed that women always worried about trifles would never realize that these ?trifles? would connect Mrs. Wright to the murder. To keep quiet was the revenge of these women. This may be the only time they can claim victory over men. The ultimate victory for women, to outsmart the males authority was finally spoken.
