Throughout the book Guitar Highway Rose, Bridget Lowry writes about the problems that adults face as well as adolescence. Many of the problems explored in this book apply to both generations. Bridget Lowry is trying to show that all generations have their share of ups and downs, and that nobody is perfect.
In this book a big part of it is the characters finding out their identity, who they are and who they want to be. Both generations are doing this. This is showing that no matter how old or young you are there is always time to discover yourself. Characters who are finding out their identity in the parent generation are Lily and Malvina. Lily starts to realise that her whole life has been centred on her children and she doesn't know haw to relax or remember how to keep herself happy. She eventually goes to see a psychiatrist who tells her to do three things for herself everyday. After doing this she is happier, her husband Robert is happier and her children are happier. Malvina has just broken up with her husband Neil and she has to change her whole life. Moving to a new state, finding new friends and bringing up her child on her own. Characters who are trying to find their identity in the adolescence generation are Rosie and Asher. With all the problems of growing up from a child to an adult sometimes adolescences' can forget who they are and try to go with the crowd with problems like peer pressure. Asher and Rosie have a hard time trying to discover their true identity. Rosie has too many boundaries and Asher does not have enough. They decide to run away so that they can be free to do whatever they want whenever they want only to discover that where they really want to be is home and that that is the best place to find out who you are.
Relationships between the characters moulded the kind of person that they were. Relationships between two parents, Parents and their children and adolescence with themselves. There were many types of relationships; crushes, love, friendship and many more. Not all of the relationships were perfect but not many are. Lily's relationship with Rosie was a typical one. The child wanting to be free and make their own choices and the mother not wanting to let go. Although they both loved each other they fought a lot. In the end of the novel there seemed to be some mutual ground between them and they met each other in the middle. The relationship between Asher and Malvina was a lot more laid back. Asher had a lot more freedom to do what he wanted but there was also resentment towards his mother because her and his father had split up and his whole life had to change. The relationship between Lily and Robert was that although they loved each other they did not agree on a few things and they would hide things from each other. This made the relationship a little difficult. The relationship between Rosie and Asher didn't start off very well. Rosie liked Asher but was too scared to go up to him and Asher thought that Rosie was a goodie goodie. They eventually found out that they liked the same sorts of things and they started to like each other. There relationship kept growing and then they decided to run away together. After this they were officially an item.
All of these relationships show how Bridget Lowry has talked equally about both the generations.
Dealing with change took a big part in this novel for both of the generations. Every character had to deal with change at some point and had to overcome the difficulty of it. Rosie and Asher were changing all throughout the book with every new experience. Dealing with the changing pf themselves and also the others around them. Lily had to deal with the fact that Rosie was growing up and changing and that she would have to let go and let her make her own mistakes and live her own life. Malvina had to deal with the change in her whole life. She had just broken up with her husband, she moved all the way across Australia and she has to make all new friends. All of this and dealing with Asher's changing.
