My guess is that because the opposite of joy is sorrow and sorrow is an emotion that no one wants to be indulged in; therefore, it behooves people to seek joy. To some people joy is the result of the circumstances of their lives such as wealth, companions, etc. while others may believe that joy is a result of love and self-fulfillment. Before I continue my babbling on the subject I would like to first define this thing called joy. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary joy is defined as " a feeling of happiness that comes from success, good fortune, or a sense of well being" (Merriam Webster 407). Some of the words that are commonly interchanged with joy are bliss, elation, delight, pleasure, ecstasy, gladness, and happiness. Joy is interchanged with happiness more than any other word. The Merriam- Webster Dictionary defines happiness as " a state of well being and contentment" ( Merriam-Webster 48). It is interesting to see the similarities of the definitions of joy and happiness, as if the two words have the same meaning; but actually they have somewhat different meanings.
The words that I mentioned in the above paragraph all point into the same direction as far as definition is concerned; they all relate to cheerfulness. But I am skeptical; I refuse to believe that all of these words carry the same weight. It is something special about that word and the feeling that we call joy. The feeling of joy sticks out from the rest, it has a stronger sense about itself and people who have it have a stronger since about themselves. Why? Because joy is the strongest state of being that a person can have. When you have joy sorrow cannot enter your heart and sadness is only temporary.
Now some of you may be thinking " what about happiness, does it not produce the same results?" Unfortunately it does not, happiness is not as strong as joy.
