The setting takes place in an unnamed futuristic city sometime in the 4th century. All equipment is interactive. Computers do everything except there are no books aloud. If you are caught with a book you will be killed in one of the big crematoriums that the town posses. Guy Montag tells the story and he is the protagonist. Montag's wife is a major character and they don't really share any love or affection. Clarisse McClellan is Montag's seventeen-year-old neighbor. He likes her a lot and she questions his ways of life making him understand how bad his town really is.
The book starts on a regular day for Montag. Clarisse asks Montag Are you happy? This challenges Montags way of life and this makes him want to change throughout the story. The reason Clarisse asks this is because Montag is a fireman and he burns people's houses that they have books. He overlooks the fact that he is destroying people's property for a living.
Montag goes home to Millie, his wife. They both don't love each other and they never have any affection between them. In fact, they barely ever notice each other. That night Montag notices bombers flying over his town. This is foreshadowing an upcoming war. Montag finds out that Millie has taken an overdose. He calls the suicide orderlies. They save Millies life. The next day Millie doesn't even talk to Montag and totally ignores him.
Montag finds out that Clarisse has been killed and he really gets upset. He tries to talk to his wife about books and ideas and what is wrong with society, but she is not interested. The next day Montag doesn't come to work and his boss comes to his house. Montag's boss says that if he doesn't get rid of all of the books he has stolen over the years they will burn his house.

After his boss leaves Montag shows the books to his
wife. Millie is scared and won't deal with what's happening. Montag gets mad and takes one of his books and leaves to visit Faber, an old English professor he once knew. The two of them get a plan to save the ideas from
Montags books. They decide that Montag must memorize the
books. When Montag goes home, he shows his books to two neighbors. He then goes to the fire station to make sure no one is suspicious of him. At the fire station, the alarm sounds and Montag goes to a house to burn it down. When they get there he finds out that the house he is supposed to burn is his house.
At his house he finds out that his own wife has turned him
in. In a rage he kills Beatty and gets attacked by a Hound. He gets away and goes to see Faber. They go to the country to meet up with some other people that left. They all have memorized books and they want to write their thoughts on paper.
While Montag is in the country, the long awaited battle happens.
The city that Montag came from is completely destroyed. After the war, the whole city is dead and they all want to build a new city.
Throughout the story, Montag changes a lot. The story started with him being a bad person that burns down other people's houses. Then when his neighbor questions him he starts to question his town. He starts to realize how important books are. Then he starts to try and change the town.
The author did achieve his purpose of the book. I think he meant to show how government with threats could control people. He showed how the people got sucked into society and didn't realize what they were doing. The writing was very powerful.
A big strength of the book is the way the author describes the town. He tells in detail the technology they had in the 4th century. This was very interesting to me. He talks about interactive computers and robot dogs and doors that know your going to be there before you get there.
I don't believe that there was a weakness to this whole book. Everything was well written and told. I felt like I was there in the story. This book was definitely interesting. With the futuristic town you could never guess what was going to happen next. I would recommend this book to others. It is great for all readers. Anyone would love to hear about Montag'sway of life.
After I read the book I was thinking that the 4th century is a long time from now, but the way the author told it, it wasn't that far in the future. Maybe the robots and doors and things were futuristic, but the dictatorship of the town feels like now. People in different countries are told to believe that Americans are bad. Everyone goes with it because they are threatened if they don't. Then in a while nobody questions it and that is how they go about life. In the book Fahrenheit 451 Montag was one of the only people that questioned society. This teaches people to stand up for what you think is right, and this is why I enjoyed the book.
