Analysis of the Lottery

The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson draws many parallels to society today. Her use of tradition and violence enlightens readers about things which take place in their own communities. It illustrates how inhumane, people can be towards one another. Also it demonstrates that as a society, we despise change. Behind this harsh story lies the truth of how human beings act. We are motivated by self-interest only.

The black box is a symbol of tradition; it has been in the village for as longs as anyone can remember. The block box symbolizes how people in society, like to hold on to what is familiar and fear the unknown. "The box is symbolic of our loathing change; it is old and splintered showing that we cling to what is familiar rather than change," (planet papers 1). In the story, the author talks about how the box is old and Mr. Summers tries to get a new box but no one likes that idea. "Mr. Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by black box," (Jackson, 7). The villagers did not like the idea of replacing the black box because that brought about change and change is viewed as not a good thing. This is how modern society is; people in the world today fear the idea of change. Even the idea of change scares us because it upsets our routine or traditional way of doing things. Shirley Jackson, by effective use of symbolism tells readers that society today is very similar to society in the past. We try to hold on to what we know for as long as we can, like keeping the black box even though it is falling apart.

Block parties are a common thing in the United States today. No one really knows how they got started; we just all go along pretending like we know. Imagine a tradition of stoning your neighbor to death, as unbelievable as it sounds; it is true, in the lottery at least. As a reader, I was appalled to find out that this is what the lottery is used for. Also that no one would speak out about how it was wrong or that it should not be done anymore. As people of society, we like to conform to our surroundings with out asking questions. We go along with traditions that we do not really understand because everyone else does it also. Notice how at the end of the story, when Mrs. Hutchinson was about to be stoned, she cried out, "It isn't fair, it isn't right, she screamed and then they were upon her," (Jackson 78). She never raised the fact that the lottery was cruel or why they still did it. All she said was it was not fair that it was she who had to die. It deals a lot with the fact that the stoning people is, in a sick way, okay just as long as it does not happen to you. It is like how we make fun of other people, it is all good when you tease someone else, but when it happens to you, it is not fair. "We see that even as tessie is being stoned to death she does not question the reasoning behind the lottery, but why it should be her that was to die," (planet papers 1). In Society we do not question traditions or rituals. We just go along with them. The story illustrates how cruelty is okay, as long as it is not directed towards you. Shirley Jackson effectively uses symbolism and violence in "The Lottery" to show similarities between societies in the past and present. She shows how even though time has passed most things stay that same, that being people. As time passes humans still remain the same because change is something new to us and we are afraid of what we do not know, so we keep on doing what we have always done. People blindly follow one another with out even looking back as to question whether or not what the others are doing is right or wrong. Since people do not like to change, we often times do not. The author raises interesting questions about how we behave towards one another. The way, we treat one another seems just as barbaric as "The Lottery."
