Author Toni Morrison

An important idea in Tar Baby, by Toni Morrison, is the conflicts that occur of different manners towards life between blacks and whites, and men and women. These conflicts are always distinct, but they are noticeable underneath the exterior.

The conflicts between men and women come into view in the relationship between Valerian and Margaret and Jadine and Son. Earlier in the relationship between Valerian and Margaret, Valerian is absorbed by his work, thus causing Margaret to become bored at home. This is one of the reasons why Margaret decides to have a baby, Michael, who she inflicts pain on physically. A deeper look into the association among Valerian and Margaret and their disagreements would communicate that, Valerian does not understand that Margaret is an unfulfilled being. These two don't have that very communicative relationship that Ondine and Sydney posses, who discuss anything and everything, that is on their mind. Even with their unspoken words their feelings are expressed.

The hostility between differing ethnicities such as blacks and whites is evident when an argument begins at the Christmas dinner. A number of topics are brought out into the open. For instance, Son points out to Valerian, a white male, about the issue surrounding Gideon and Therese, and the stolen apples from L'Arbe de la Croix. "If they had asked, would you have given them the apples (05)." Evidently, by seeing the scorn on Valerian's face. He realizes that Valerian only sees his workers just as that, his workers. That exist only to serve him and nothing more or less. "…all but one he knew extremely well, all but one, and even that on was in his debt (05)." Another event is brought up at the dinner table, after Valerian reveals that he had fired the help of Gideon and Therese. Ondine becomes upset at the fact that Valerian didn't inform her. Margaret goes on to defend Ondine's feelings of disrespect, "…[her feelings were hurt] by [you] not telling her (07)." Valerian goes on to comment that it doesn't really matter because, Ondine is just a cook. Sydney goes on to point out that his wife is just as important to him, as Margaret is to Valerian. The questions of inequality and discrimination are discharged in this argument.

The major conflict of this book is that between the two main lovers, Son and Jadine. This is because, of the contrast of the mix of their contrasting personalities and lifestyles. Son, who has been basically a floater, worked on ships, accidentally killed a woman, evaded the law, feels very in tune with nature and feels that he should only obey his own laws of life. While Jadine lives and highly cultured and protected life, she's a city girl who is sensible and street-savvy, she's studied fine arts and has become a successful model. However, while living together many propositions come up. Their outlooks on life are totally different. Jadine wants Son to "make it in New York," while Son doesn't equate "making it in New York" to "making it in life." "Still he insisted on Eloe. Even after she earned $,500 for four walks and a picture spread….and bought each other pretty things (4-5)." They both are ignorant to the thoughts of the opposite. Their hearts are in the right place but the two lovers go about it all wrong. Jadine thinks she is saving Son from traditional women who want him to stay a small town boy. While, Son thinks he is rescuing Jadine from Valerian, who represents white people, Son wants her to culturally come into her womanly ways, settling for fertility, while she wants to be an original. These conflicting views ultimately lead to their separation and the end of their loving relationship.

In the end, the mutual conflicts between the characters in this novel, shed a light on how different that all people are as individuals, and how we are all the same. But, conflict usually separates individuals and prevents relationships from progressing. As with the book, Jadine goes off to France, Son leaves in search for her, but it is unclear whether he goes searching for her or not. This shows that conflict is the decision factor in everyday life. Be it conflicts with other people, the mind, the spirit, or the heart.
