Few people today look forward to their job or like doing it. The rest of the population just deals with it, like a machine deals with a task. People lose their identity in most of today's jobs, thus they take less pride and dignity in their work. The story of Bartleby parallels perfectly with today's situation.

When you first get a new job it is exciting. You get to do something that you haven't really done before; it's a break in repetition. After the first few weeks it gets a little more boring and boring until you are fed up with it. You go back to the point and reason you left your other job, it gets too repetitive. You lose the feeling when you are going into work, "What's going to happen today?", "Am I going to encounter something I never have before?". Instead of having that feeling you end up feeling like the same exact thing you felt yesterday is going to happen again today, like always. Your going to go into work, punch in, sit down in your isolated cubical, get lunch, come back to work in your isolated cubical, and then finally punch out.

Bartleby went through this same exact feeling and process. He came into his job, sat down at his desk, copied legal documents, had a little lunch break, went back to copy legal documents, then left when it was time to go home. Bartleby, however, did not put up with the repetition. He refused to sit there at his desk and copy legal documents from sunrise to sunset. He wanted to part from ordinary, the foreseen future, the repetition of life. Instead of that he wanted life to take him for a turn, he didn't want to foresee the future anymore, and he needed something new to spice up his last few years of life.

People are not meant to live a life of isolation, repetition, alienation, and separation. Humans are social creatures, being social provides us a different type of nourishment, a nourishment which is a necessity to our lives. Bartleby was not getting that type of nourishment. He was already an elderly man and did not want the last few years of his life to be boring, isolated, and repetitive. He wanted to leave this world feeling fulfilled and nourished, like every human being does, thus he needed to make a change. That change was his scrivener's job. It was affecting his whole life.

This parallels to our lives today. We should take after Bartleby in the way that we handle our own lives and our own jobs. People today can't just sit there and hope that their jobs will get better; they have to do something about it, take action. When you travel on the MBTA people there are a prime example of what happens to you when you deal with repetition day in and day out. You become isolated, quiet, and alienated from other people. That is not how it should be. Humans are meant to be social; it is in everyone's soul. You should look forward to going to work and socializing with all of your co-workers.

Employers would benefit greatly from making sure their employees are enjoying their work and not feeling robotic. Employees that are satisfied with their jobs tend to perform better and have greater outcomes then employees who are not satisfied. Bartleby is a prime example of someone who is unsatisfied with their job. Instead of doing a less than adequate job he refuses to do work for his employer. This doesn't just affect his relationship with the employer but it affects everyone in that workplace.

In conclusion, our lives are not meant to be repetitious. Repetition leads to isolation, alienation, depression, and boredom. We are social creatures who receive nourishment through socializing with others. Our jobs should not affect our lives and should not be a negative factor. We should look forward to work, funny as it sounds, because work takes up the majority of our lives. So why not make it fulfilling?
