Quite often many people may find themselves wanting to buy a book, rather then borrowing one for various reasons. One of the most obvious reasons may to simply have the freedom of writing in their own property. Some people often believe that writing down information will help them remember it better. If you want to get the most out of your reading you shouldn't only read it you should mark it up to have a better understanding of the material placed in front of you. I hope that if you are not one of these people by the end of this presentation you will agree with me that students should be provided with personal copies of the assigned novels they are given so they can have a fuller understanding of the material.

In 140, Dr. Mortimer Alder, a philosopher and educator, gave a very impressive speech about the necessity of having the private ownership of the assigned novels you are given in class. He encourages readers to not only "read between the lines", but to also "write between the lines". I find this statement very relevant. There are times when students are in class listening to a lecture and if they only right down a fragment of what a teacher is telling them when it comes time to study this fragment is now becomes useless, but if the student is writing down a fragment next to paragraphs already written in the textbook this statement will remind them of the extra information the teacher told them that is not stated in the textbook and now the student can have a better understanding of the material heshe just read. Alder also makes some very important points about possession. First, he says that an item becomes your property once you purchase it. Although he does say a book becomes your own once you purchase it he says that this is only the first part of possession. Complete ownership of an item only becomes your own when you make it a piece of you and the easiest way to do that is to write in it. I also find Alders statement here to be very true also. Often when you borrow a book you tend to try and keep it in its best possible condition so there will be no controversy when you return it to the owner, however, if it is your own book you can mark it up as you wish with the hope of understanding the material better and making it a true part of yourself.

Alder also says that there are different types of book keepers. The first have all different types of books but they remain untouched and not commented on. The second also owns many books but will only read a few and also keep them unmarked for he likes to keep his books in new conditions. The third person is the only person Alder believes who really understands what it means to own a book. This person's book is marked up and scribbled in. Here the only person who understands what it really means to own a book of your own is the third person. This third person is more likely to get the most out of his reading. He will be able to place his own notes in the book so he can later remember his thoughts in the weeks to come. Cheap Custom Essays on Possession

Alder believes marking up a book is an essential part of reading. He claims marking up a book keeps you "wide awake". Second he says that reading is often active and if it is active it involves thinking and thinking involves writing. Lastly, writing reinforces your mind into remembering important facts and ideas that can be necessary in a full understanding of the piece of literature placed in front of you. There is not limit where you can write your ideas. You can write them on a notepad, in the margins, or even the spaces in-between the lines. These marks become a primary part of the book. Alders thoughts are especially true for students who receive summer reading assignments. Quite often students are given a range of -5 books to read over the summer. By the time they start reading there third book they have forgotten most of the first one and there memories of the second one will only become worse as they begin to read the forth book. By the time school starts and they are to take tests on the books many students may not even be able to remember the main characters name of the first book they read. However, if they are able to highlight and underline in those books they can quickly reread the important parts of the book before the big test with the hopes of receiving a higher grade.

Alder insists that reading is not a one way path. It must be a relationship between the reader and the author. He also gives us a list of ways to mark up a book wisely. He tells us to underline, star, asterisk, and circle important points and key phrases. These methods can be especially important for students who must write term papers. Instead of rereading entire chapters they can just find where they stared the important information. This can save them time to put effort in other assignments instead of rushing to finish off the nights homework because the student had to reread five chapters to pull out the important information. The last comment Alder makes is probably the most influential. He simply states that "a few friends are better then a thousand acquaintances". This can be tightly connected to reading novels because it is not the number of novels you read it is how well you understand those novels and how they simply touch each individual in different ways.

I hope that by listening to this presentation you will understand why I so strongly feel for making novels a student's possession. This possession has many benefits. It will not only help a student understand a novel better but also understand themselves better. Marking up a book is an essential part of being an active reader. I hope that you will take this proposition seriously and greatly consider it.
