Thrills and Eeriness

Once upon a time there was a bird and an elephant. They were great friends and then one day the bird tried to teach the elephant how to fly. And with a little magic fairy dust, they both flew. Except for the elephant.

Now, tell yourself honestly, did you know that the story was going to end that way? The surprise, the thrill of watching a movie or hearing a story and not knowing what is coming next. Well, the surprise is coming next. An event that we never imagined in a million years was the solution to the plot. I think that we all agree a good story has a twist some element that is unexpected -- a "surprise." I know that I, being hugely stubborn, would never want to believe that there were actually several clues leading up to an astonishment of an ending; but, there are. In the short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and the movie Psycho, there are several instances in which definite foreshadowing gives away the ending.

"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" houses many indications that death may possibly be occurring instead of what is actually being told to the reader, a phenomenal escape from fatality. The story has some amazing examples of foreshadowing which is displayed by its theme that one can't escape death. Dying is inevitable and life is the occupation of one's time while we are essentially just waiting to die. This is a fact that no one person wants to face and this short story encapsulates man's primal fear of death. The following statement is describing Peyton as he is running away from the guards while the guards are shooting at him, "An appalling splash…traveled through the air. …and died in an explosion. A rising sheet of water curved over him, fell down upon him, blinded him, strangled him!" In these two simple sentences look at how much the author allows you to see Peyton's death, subtly giving away the surprise with little words or phrases (underlined). In particular, the excessive use of the word "dead" indicates a feeling that Peyton actually is dying. We know that his death sentence will be carried out through hanging, in order for a person to be hanged, they must swing through the air. The author's phrase "traveled through the air" to describe an explosion could also perhaps be translated to say that Peyton himself, in dying "traveled through the air" before an explosion of death crept over him. To add, the words "blinded" a man is usually blindfolded when he is being hanged and "strangled" someone dying from hanging is, medically, dead from strangulation and lack of oxygen to the brain. "They will not do that again,' he thought…" in response to explosions following him (illustrated by the previous quote); showing that he can not face the fact that his death is inevitable.

Foreshadowing can also be seen as Peyton Farquhar, so conveniently, makes a miraculous recovery just when faced with the fear of dying; he suddenly becomes superman in order to save himself. According to the author's description, Peyton has never done anything of the hero / brave man-sort in his real life. The author describes him as "…a planter…a slave owner…and…a politician…devoted to the Southern cause." Farquhar owns slaves and therefore, does no work rather he just assigns it. He is also a politician and we all know politicians are known for being swift and agile. Although, the author also informs us that "Circumstances of an imperious nature…prevented him [Peyton Farquhar] from taking service with the gallant army…" He wasn't able to join the army but he can then dodge bullets in order to get out of being hanged? How does that work?

The movie Psycho is also a prime example of the effect of foreshadowing on theme and the audiences response to the surprise. Throughout the entire movie, one can't shake the sense of eeriness, the feeling that you know something is going to happen but you don't quite want to brace yourself because then you'll miss the surprise. Perhaps the audience is always on the edge due in part to the creepy background music that later became stereotypical horror movie composition. When Marion is driving up to the Bates Motel and away from the officer and after she sees he boss when she has just stolen the money, we hear these eerie noises that foreshadow something awful is going to happen. The movie is full of instances that, in today's movies, are considered clich and overdone. But I believe that they started here. For example, when Marion first drives up to the Bates Motel, it is raining outside…the international sign that something bad is going to happen (or someone is going to kiss).

The eeriness that Hitchcock creates in this film never truly leaves us, from the opening scene of peering into a hotel window looking at the lover's departure to the final scene where Norman has transformed into his mother and we see a dissolve from his face to his mother's face to the vehicle being pulled out of the swamp that contains Marion's body. A scene in which I personally got a strong sense of eeriness was where Norman and Marion are sitting back in his parlor talking after first having met. "We're all in our private traps…" Norman says during his conversation with Marion as she eats a sandwich. During this sentence and the following speech, the audience learns that perhaps Norman feels very alone, and has all his life. A human being is not designed to be left alone for a number of years with no human interaction this usually causes some kind of mental illness. Of course, at this point in the story Marion knows that Norman lives with his mother, and she also knows that his mother doesn't seem very nice nor does she appear to be extraordinarily healthy. Marion then suggests to Norman that he put his mother "some place" implying a mental institution. Norman immediately jumps at the comment and shows the first signs of anger; however, he is still very sedate. During his next few words the camera focuses completely on him at an upward angle (giving the illusion that Norman is leering). His eyes never blink frankly, he looks scary, especially as he says the words, "mad house." Like he knows what it's like to be in one.

In the same scene, Hitchcock makes a dramatic point of showing us an inner coil of Norman's psyche just when you think Norman is about to explode, finally, with anger, he sits back. He leans back into the chair, through body language suggesting that he doesn't deal with anger well. Immediately after, he grabs the stuffed hawk that rests on the table next to his chair. Norman then proceeds to reveal his "hobby" of stuffing birds. During this speech, yes, one hand is on the bird that he so obviously is proud of stuffing but his other hand remains in his crotch. This struck me as odd, as by the end of the movie, we learn that when Norman is sexually attracted to a woman, his "mother" then kills the girl. Because Norman is really his mother, he will not allow himself to be sexual with any female or feel any sexual feelings toward the opposite sex. In order to inhibit these sexual feelings, perhaps he finds pleasure, instead, in "stuffing" birds.

Another instance where Hitchcock presents Norman to the audience to foreshadow the ending is shown when Marian is checking into the motel, and Norman is assigning her a room number. You can see in his facial and hand gestures that he, at first, reaches for the key for room three and then moves to key two and finally hands her the key to room one. Why would he do this if something weren't going to happen? We later find out that he did this in order to "peep" at her through the hole in the wall of Norman's parlor.

Foreshadowing is often present in stories that have a surprise ending. But, if you could be able to point out all these things and know exactly how the story ends the first time you see it, would you ever want to see a horror movie or read a book again? So maybe foreshadowing is just a tool used by English teachers to give students something to do; or, maybe it adds just that much more to the rush of adrenaline and the sigh of relief added with the turn to your friend "I knew that was going to happen all along."
