The belief in conformity and the pressures from outside influences seem to sever the loyalty society has on others. This statement is extremely significant concerning the book, A Passage to India. Certain characters within the novel are faced with obstacles they must overcome, but at times these characters seem to fall victim to conformity. "He felt he had been passive long enough, and that he might be drawn in to the wrong current if he did not make a stand," (08) Fielding seems to experience these peer pressures frequently throughout the novel. His choice to go against his people only makes him a stronger character within the novel. Not only do the characters in Passage to India feel these pressures but there is also a strong presence of this need to conform in our society today, which leads to important moral questions regarding loyalty and individualism. When should we stay true to what we believe in? The need to be apart of a "safety net," has dangerously altered certain judgments within our lives.

Pressures from outside influences have caused people to go against their own beliefs. Friends, family, and teachers are all factors that influence many decisions in our lives everyday. Conformity does not just occur within the novel but it is also apparent in real-life situations. In schools, conformity is the typical norm. People learn to accept these cliques and no one really chooses to rebel. Teens are expressed through cliques and judged by how their cliques dress. Loyalty may disappear when others are slaves to these almost mind-altering groups. For example, a person may not agree with how their friend feels about a "lower clique, but due to the fear of abandonment, the weaker party remains silent. This unfortunate silence leads to more problems, which may later on cause regret. Society's view of life is not society's but it is in the eyes of others. This statement only deteriorates a person's will to think freely and be his or her own person.

Fielding is society's puppet in the beginning of the novel, A Passage to India. Fielding and his other English friends were leading examples of conformities that ruled over India. Initially, the novel appears to have no one person rebelling against the British. Although, Fielding somewhat disagrees with the British, he remains indifferent when talks about the Indians arise due to this fear of being deserted. In this case, Fielding may feel somewhat sympathetic towards the Indians but his main reason not to act on it is because he does not want to go against the only thing he really knows. "India a nation! What an apotheosis! Last comer to the drab 1th century sisterhood! Wadding in at this hour of the world to take her seat! She whose only peer was the Holy Roman Empire. She shall rank with Guatemala and Belgium perhaps!" (61) Fielding's forceful statement at the end of the novel represents the strong influence the British had on Fielding. Fielding and Aziz are close friends in comparison to other Indian and British groups within the novel, but there is still a strong inexistent being inside the both of them that trigger certain rages. There is an obvious distancing between the two of them because of their conflicting backgrounds. It is hard for them to make any type of friendship work at the time because of the situation they are in. The feeling of being inferior to a friend is not what Aziz wants, and the Fielding also does not want to resent Aziz solely because of the fact that he is Indian. All of these issues are present within the novel, and because of these issues the friendship between Aziz and Fielding appear to be extremely fragile.

The reader sees a different side to Aziz at the end of the novel. Due to conformity on the British side, Aziz has formed his own view regarding the future of India. "No foreigners of any sort! Hindu and Moslem and Sikh all shall be one! Hurrah! Hurrah for India! Hurrah! Hurrah!" (61) Aziz puts aside the negative opinions he may have had against the Hindus and declares that India is solely theirs. This is a very significant statement because now Aziz has finally accepted that the only way India can succeed is by forming one group that will stand strong against the British and that is including Hindus and Sikhs. Aziz refuses to put up his fake persona in order to be a British puppet instead he stands up for what he believes in. He is loyal to what he feels India, as a nation, must stand for. By standing up for his rights and not following anyone else's pressures, Aziz has initiated a bright future for all the citizens of India.

Conformity brought on by the pressures of others have in no way improved our society but have only curtailed our loyalty for others. This statement holds true within the novel A Passage to India and it is also a strong battle, which must be fought in our society today. The only way a person can fight these pressures is by making a stand. Aziz and Fielding have both demonstrated strong characters within the novel that have chosen the right path against conformity. In the beginning of the novel, both characters appeared weak and unaware of any pressures that may hurt them later on but as the novel progresses the reader sees a strong and evident change in loyalty that in turn only becomes an advantage for these characters. The only way India as a country can succeed is by being one whole group instead of small conformities fighting against each other, and the only way Fielding can help the British realize their obvious ignorance is by expressing his loyalty to Aziz and by doing that he must stand up for himself and risk everything he believes in. In conclusion, conformity only leads to the deterioration of loyalty so instead of following the obvious norm, we as a society must think as individuals in order to improve existing conflicts within others and ourselves.
