The Phantom of the Opera was written by Andrew Lloyd Weber and was showing at the Majestic Theatre. Briefly, The Phantom is the story of a man (The Phantom) who lives underneath an old theater and falls in love with a particular young lady who sings there (named Christine). He becomes obsessed with her and the need for her to play the main role in their production. He is also jealous of her relationship with another man. He pines away for Christine, makes problems for the theater, and eventually takes her for his own. Phantom has suspense, romance, violence, beautiful music and lots of special effects. There is no denying that this musical is a hit, and that Andrew Lloyd Webber is an extremely talented man. As an Entertainment Technology major, I greatly appreciated every aspect of this production.

If you are the type of person that evaluates a play by it's technical characteristics, you as a critic would give this musical an A+. Some of the best things about this musical were the effects used. What other Broadway show has a chandelier that comes crashing down, or a foggy boat ride that makes the stage appear to be a river? A great fly system was definitely needed for these effects and for the quick scene changes as well. There were many moveable pieces of scenery and props. I would be looking at a flat stage in one minute, and the next be transported into a basement with ramps and stairs leading down to a small boat floating on a stream, it was incredible! The stage also had more holes and trap doors that I had ever imagined. The set design for this production was amazing, you feel as if you are actually in that Paris Opera house, or in the Phantoms secret lair. The proscenium stage was beautifully decorated with huge golden angels, gorgeous backdrops, mirrors, candles, a huge pipe organ and an elephant at the opening of the play that would have you guessing how it was constructed.

The scenery and effects will amaze and entertain you, but the music will hypnotize you. I rarely have any interest in music when I view a play, I either love it or hate it, but some musical pieces filled the theater with such emotion that I could not help tapping my feet. On the other hand, there were such pieces that created a very mysterious and haunting feeling. Think of Me, Angel of Music, and The Phantom of the Opera will truly haunt you with their beauty. Overall, most of the music was very catchy and Non-lovers of opera, including I, will be pleasantly surprised on how much they enjoyed it.

The actors, both Christine and the Phantom had beautiful singing voices. The musical pieces were sung perfect. Christine's voice was often calm and mellow, however the Phantom's voice was thrilling and dramatic. His voice was so strong that it is hard to believe it was not micked. Visually, the Phantom was very exciting and entertaining to watch. Throughout the play, we see different aspects of the Phantom the merciless tyrant, the desperate lover, the caring human, and the fatherly teacher. The actor who played him was generally excellent. I am also not one to really appreciate costumes, but at the opening of Act II, the Masquerade scene the site of everyone in elaborate costumes and masks was impressive.

This is one of the best shows Broadway currently has to offer. I fully recommend The Phantom of the Opera to anyone who is either visiting New York City, or simply has not yet seen this classic musical. I think you either love a musical or you hate it. To me, The Phantom of the Opera is a very elegant, well-assembled production. I guarantee when you leave the theatre, you will be humming the tunes, thinking about the floating gondola, and of course the chandelier. As an entertainment technology major, it feels good to see what you learn in the classroom being applied on stage. The backstage crew should take a bow at the end of the show as well, their coordination was impressive.
