Different Aspects of Religion
Why are we here? Why is there good and evil? Where do we go when we die? Some time or another people ask themselves these questions. But they will soon find out that the person who asks the questions will have to choose who has the right answers. It might be difficult to find the correct answer out there because there are so many religions to choose from, each having its own answer to the questions of life. All religions have three main points, which are a belief in a higher power, sacred texts, and the need to live ones life in accordance to their religion.
A belief in a higher power is the focus of a religion. Without the higher power there would be no religion, no sacred texts, everything would be meaningless. No human could create life, as we know it. Its impossible because if a human created the world who created that human? It's a contradiction in itself. The world is so complicated and intricately designed that something bigger then us humans had to be a part of. Sacred texts are a way for us to learn more about the higher power. It is a way that we could feel closer to our higher power and explains to us how the world came to exist and why. Some people are more gifted in the interpretation of the sacred texts and they become the religions holy men. Their job is to aid others in their journey to understanding. By reading the sacred texts humans also get to figure out how they should change their lives to follow the teachings of the higher being. This is the third point of a religion. It shows that they have had an effect by changing their ways and follow what their higher power would want them to do, so in the end heaven is the reward.
Primal Religion is a religion in its own category. No one ever asks the question what time is it?(Smith, 7) For these people the concept of time does not exist. Instead of them going through the technological changes, they have remained true to their roots. Their beliefs have stayed the same instead of the occasional once a week worship.

Everyday, is a religious day for them; their whole lives revolve around their religion. Among the languages of American Indians there is no word for art, because for Indians everything is art.(Smith, 76) Meaning if somebody wanted to know about the Indian religion they can start anywhere, from a poem to utensils. Although they do believe in a higher power, they do not worship him directly but by a different way. The Supreme being is not named because he is unknowable. We worship him through his creation for he is everything in his creation. (Smith, 78)
In Primal Religions there are no such things as Holy Scriptures, but word of mouth. Primal religions never knew the art of writing so all the knowledge that was found was not written but kept in their minds. Meaning that they did not have holy writings, but there ways of life and their religious beliefs were kept mentally. So even though they did not write anything holy, they spoke the words of their religious traditions.
Although, their oral tradition is very important, engulfing themselves in their religion is its primary focus. In Hustons Smith book, he mentions of an inquirer who lived with a tribe called the Black Elk for two years. The inquirer said that Black Elk did not represent searching for the ultimate truth, but instead was a quest that required preliminary prayer and sacrificial cleansing. The diligently followed tracks are signs or intimations of the goal and the final contact or identity with the quarry is the realization of Truth, the ultimate goal of life. (Smith, 76) Everyday they are searching for the truth in a religious way, and living their lives according to their religion.
In Confucianism, the belief of a higher power is non-existent. Instead the religion is based upon ancient teachings about a man called Kung Fu-tzu, also known as Confucius. His teachings and ideas were based on how humanity should behave and act. It is a code of conduct. For example, in Confucius five key terms all that is talked is being an ideal citizen or superior man. The superior man considers righteousness to be essential in everything. He performs it according to the rules of propriety. He bring it forth in humility. (Van Voorst, 147) All around the teachings are based on how to be a model citizen. Confucianism is a teaching on how to be happy and better person here on earth.
Confucianism also has sacred writings that talk about their creator of their religion. In the writings, Confucius life is talked about and so are his teachings on how to be a superior man. But in my opinion, this religion does not make any reference on the creation of earth or a reference to a supreme power.
During the time of Confucianism, the emperor was a deity (There were many deities at that time). The words of Christ and his disciples, ancient writings of the Old Testament as well as the teachings of Mohammed were not in existence in Asia at that time. If one notes the principles of the philosophy, there is no reference to any religion.(Confucius Principles )
If someone were to follow this religion and become the superior man, does it mean that they will still go to heaven? Even though they have become what Confucius would want to be, they still have a choice to make if god is real or not.
Taoism is a religion based on the belief of Tao or Dow. Tao refers to a power which envelopes, surrounds and flows through all things, living and non-living. The Tao regulates natural processes and nourishes balance in the Universe. It embodies the harmony of opposites (light and dark, no male without female).(religion-cults) Even though god is not mentioned, he is referred to as Tao.
Before heaven and earth were born, Solitary and silent, Stands alone and unchanging, pervading all things without limit. It is like the mother of all under heaven, But I dont know its name - Better call it Tao. Better call it great. (Van Voorst, 16)
Taoism sacred scriptures are similar to the bible. They have sayings that talk about life but Taoist writings incorporate more poetic writings. The Taoist scriptures also talk about how to find the Tao from within the body. It talks about the different methods on harnessing the energy from Tao. But if we push aside the energy of Tao, we can find that the scriptures talk more about individual harmony, death, the world and ethics.
In Taoism, if somebody chooses to live their life the right way they will be rewarded at the end, but for bad deeds there are retributions. For good deeds the final door way awaits which is a successful future. Heaven in its course protects him; happiness and financial rewards follow; all evil things keep far from him; Spiritual Intelligences defend him. (Van Voorst,176) Tao in a way can be compared to some people trying to find god. For example, In the Van Voorst book there is a passage where it talks about that if the heart beliefs in god but yet you do not do anything, you will die horribly. Well in a way we can compare that to our lives, because if we do believe in god, but do not worship him properly or try to live our lives correctly, we will find eternal sadness. The Taoism says that the Tao is in all of us; we just need to know how to bring it out. We can compare that on some people wanting to believe in god, but they need the will power and courage. Everything starts from within a persons own mind.
Religion is a delicate subject at times to talk about. Everybody has their different views, and while other choose not to get involved in religion at all. We cant be sure if there is a higher power out there, but our faith makes us believe. My three points are my main ideal on what religion means to me. Even though in this paper, one of the religions did not see my view I do not dislike it, I am not going to shun it away. It brings out a new sense of how various religions can be so different.
