Every sports-crazed child has dreamed of winning a championship. They imagine life being a champion and adding to the cause of their team success. It is only natural for a child to dream of success in whatever he does. Growing up playing baseball I had the same ambition to become a champion. Beginning in little league and continuing all the way through high school, I excelled in sports, but it wasn't until my senior year in high school that I really felt like a champion. The El Segundo Baseball Tournament is prestigious, and considered an honor to be invited to play. Teams from all over Southern California were invited to play, including my baseball team from Arcadia. Pressure build up from game to game in the tournament brackets. Everyday a new loser was sent home in a gut wrenching defeat. After one week of tenacious play only two teams remained. The Arcadia and Crespi baseball teams were to face each other in the championship.

Walking off of the big, yellow school bus, with Arcadia Unified School District blasted on the side with block letters, was quite a moral crusher as I saw the Crespi baseball team emerge from their bus across the way. Crespi had chartered a huge luxury bus to carry them from there home to the field. However, my mind was focused on winning the game. Headphones blaring rap cushioned sounds of parents and spectators from encouraging or discouraging either team. Stepping from the bus, walking to the parking lot, and passing through security into the stadium was a new experience. Standing on the field inside that stadium was the greatest feeling I had ever felt. The last championship I had won was a league title, a year prior to this event, but nothing compared to the emotion that was building within my body, ready to carry me to victory or fall to defeat.

Don't blow this game guys

Our coached tried to mutter some words of inspiration; however, it cam out like a death threat. He always had a way with his words to get the best out of his team. A little cheer, a pat on the butt, and the players were announced individually as they greeted the crowd. The game was ready to commence.Order Custom Win! paper

PLAY BALL!

Being the visiting team, decided by a simple flip of a coin, my Arcadia team was up to bat first. A few clutch hits, and some smart base running by our centerfielder gave us a one run lead after half an inning of play. Now, it was there turn! Sprinting onto the field I got a rush of confidence that pumped me up even more for a game that I thought was impossible to be more anxious for.

CRACK

OH NO!

A single

Crack

A double.

The first two hitter were on for Crespi, our star pitcher looked like he had already competed in a game prior to this one. However, my team was able to regain composer and escape the first inning with the score -1. Crespi had taken the lead, and had gained a lot of confidence. The second inning began, and I was first to bat. I stood in the batters box, watching their pitcher warm up, studying were his arm released the ball. The umpire called me to the plate beginning the second inning of a great game.

The pitcher began his crafty yet erratic motion to deliver the ball. The ball is hurled toward the plate, where I was standing.

WHACK!

The ball launched from my bat and over the fence in center, over the wall of the stadium, and finally came to rest on the roof of a near by building. Obviously the farthest ball I had hit in my life, and enough of a boost to rally my team. This was an awesome feeling. Everyone in the stadium going nuts realizing that this was going to be a game to remember! Innings came and went, the score changed hands almost every inning. Both teams were highly competitive and wanted that trophy. I played second base, and with the help from my infielders turned multiple double platys to keep us in the game.

After regulation play, we were tied at 6-6, the only thing to do was enter extra innings. Things couldn't have been more exciting. Entering the bottom of the eighth inning my Arcadia baseball team had gone up 8-6 and just needed to hold the heart of Crespi's line up to secure the victory. Quickly our closing pitcher struck out the first two hitters. Then, a disaster struck. A double followed by another double scoring the runner on second. Now we were only ahead by one run. With a runner in scoring position, any ball put into play was surly going to tie the game again, and possibly end my hopes for that championship.

CLANK

The ball came off the bat of Crepi's number one hitter. My reactions from the moment I saw the ball, till the moment I left my feet, to potentially stop it, was less then a heartbeat. Extending my body completely I could feel the ball enter and become trapped in the webbing of my 10.5 inch glove. The runner was quick out of the box and blazing down the line. Regaining control I threw myself completely the opposite direction, back towards first base. The first base man, shocked that I had even stopped the ball was just getting to the bag as the ball left my fingers towards him. The game was on the line, and this was the greatest play of my life. The glove popped loudly; the sound was intensified to me, most likely due my anticipation. My throw had beaten the runner by tiny steps, and had given Arcadia the victory. We were the El Segundo Champions!

The celebration began! Usually the pitcher's mound is swarmed after a great victory; however, in this event second base was the point of celebration. Every member of the Arcadia baseball team was ecstatic that we had won the El Segundo Tournament. Even my coach through his tough exterior was overcome with joy, and leaping up and down.

After everything had calmed and my Arcadia team was settled on the field the awards ceremony began. Announcing the most valuable player for the tournament.

The announcer spoke, The Most Valuable Player of the Tournament is

With my performance throughout the tournament I knew that I had to have had a good chance to be the M.V.P. of the tournament. I had the highest batting average for any player in the tournament, and my defense was excellent.

Second baseman from Arcadia, Greg Pannoni

As my teammates patted my back, and I shook my coach's hand I proudly strutted towards the center of the baseball diamond to except my award. I was given a large, shiny plaque that was engraved Most Valuable Player, El Segundo Tournament 00. My name was also to be engraved as well as Arcadia nd baseman. It was one of the greatest awards I have received through out my baseball career. I glanced towards the stands as I raised the plaque above my head. My father was the first to catch my eye; he was so very proud of me.

Both the Arcadia and Crespi baseball teams gathered their belongings and left the stadium to return home. However, the Crespi baseball team, with their defeat, had a very long ride back to their home. I climbed the three-mesely stairs of the Arcadia High School bus, and joined my teammates for the celebration. Everyone was still so excited of what we had accomplished. The team had won the first of three championships we would win that year.
