In The Great Gatsby, a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, many aspects of American philosophy and socialism from the 10's are displayed. The dominating idea of the American Dream consisting of "self-made success" dwelled in many 10 Americans. As for Jay Gatsby, "he has, after all, not only invented and self-promoted a whole new persona for himself, but has succeeded both financially and socially" (Novelguide.com). In order to attain the American Dream, he must undertake three quests (for love, for money and for happiness) in which he will encounter problems that will either, be beneficial or restraining to him. In achieving the quests, certain concepts need to be examined in order to get a greater glance at the over dominating idea behind Jay Gatsby philosophy. Which influences were used in order to examine these concepts? How do these concepts apply to Jay Gatsby life? Generally, is Gatsby truly great? The fallowing will help answer these questions and will present Jay Gatsby's quests taking note of the encountered problems.

Gatsby's first quest is to be in love with someone that loves him mutually. "He aspired obtaining that which is unattainable, at least to the degree which he desired" (Novelguide.com). In this case, "his main goal throughout the novel is to attain true love with a former love, Daisy Buchanan" (anonymous). Since "Daisy likes her status quo and likes the security of being known as Mrs. Buchanan, she is unlikely to leave her husband" (anonymous). His second quest is attain. He obtained wealth through massive demands of bootleg liquor, which he supplied. The Valley of Ashes represents the uninhibited pursuit of wealth (SparkNotes.com). In return, he was hoping that his wealth would bring him what he desired, Daisy. He also thought that his fortune would bring him happiness, it being his third quest. Through wealth he believed that material possession would bring happiness, however, it never did. Throughout his pursuit for happiness, he threw huge parties every week thinking this could be an alternative to reach true happiness. He thought that through friends and fun this excitement would draw happiness to his life. The only real way to attain happiness was in obtaining true love. He did everything possible to have Daisy's love but he failed, so therefore, he failed in attaining happiness. "Jay became a tragic victim of the dream that so many people desired" (anonymous).

As we discuss concepts, what is morality? Morality is the quality of according values of right or good in one's conduct. In order to define morality, I based myself on religious influences. Morality has a lot to do with one's inner feelings. As for Gatsby, morality prevails within him. With good intentions, he dared to construct a life for himself dreamingly throughout his countless endeavors. He surely had fundamental good values behind his aspirations. If looking at his situation as a social issue, we could say that Gatsby demonstrated quality of immorality. His strategies used in reaching his goals were inappropriate; not that the intentions weren't good. In order to succeed financially, he undertook measures that were morally wrong. In efforts to get what he desired with a certain amount of freedom, condition of being liberal, exempted from any types of restraints, Gatsby was able to achieve anything. Living in the land of the free, he had the approbation to love (social), to evolve (cultural) and to grow (religious). He had everything needed to reach happiness. In order to succeed he, freely, created a new persona for him, modifying his standards, his outlook on life and his self-image. This took a great deal of honesty. Honesty could be defined as a quality of being true in action, thought and speech. However, in Gatsby's situation it is deeper than that. He had to face honesty within himself. In order to be honest with himself he had to face reality. To face reality, he had to self-analyze himself. Consequently, he would then know who he is and know where he stands in his society. Honesty in this case is more a question of self-cultivation, therefore a cultural influence. Religiously, he is dishonest to God. He strives for many things that God either prohibits or disagrees on the process used in getting these things. In his quest for Daisy, he immorally attempts to steal a wedded woman from a husband. He was socially dishonest. He built his wealth in an illegal way.Jay Gatsby had to become, through influences from strict moral and ethical code, integrity. He attempted to lift his social rank, therefore displaying social influences, by peers in his hubris. Successful he was. Nevertheless, he persevered in order to become the image to which he looked up to. This was indeed a cultural development. Thus, to get all of this, he must assume responsibility (fact of being obligated to something) receiving influences from society and his inner ambition. He was obligated to develop a sense of realism and a sense of logical conceptions, then, build in a respective social status. With this, he was responsible in attaining Daisy love by convincing her of his obtained social title. He would then have to dig within him to find happiness. Finally yet most importantly, the concepts of existentialism in globes Jay Gatsby philosophy. This philosophy dwells on authenticity and individualist being responsible for the consequences brought by one's acts through freedom of choice in an incomprehensible state of being. It can be said that Gatsby's dishonest ways have brought him to death. That would obviously be the religious influence behinds this argument. However, this idea of existentialism proves many of Gatsby's consequential events or downfalls in potentially prosperous situations. It's a type of justice that is brought to society in order to treat justly everyone. However, some could say that Gatsby's choices and hard work in his quests should have resulted in a better deal.

Some could say that Gatsby was truly great for achieving the basic of the American dream. In contrary, his success was false, if examined in considering the level of honesty involved in his success. The fact that he dies unjustly can create the illusion that yes he is truly great since it create a sense of sympathy for the character. Overall, his morality made him a great person but his naive ness leaded to downfall. "In spite of his success, Gatsby's primary ideological shortcoming becomes evident as he makes Daisy Buchanan the sole focus of his belief in the orgiastic future" ( Novelguide.com).

Gatsby's dream is ruined by the unworthiness of its object, just as the American dream in the 10s is ruined by the unworthiness of its object money and pleasure" (SparkNotes.com). People shouldn't have to change drastically in order to get someone to like you. Material possession evidently doesn't bring happiness. Wealth is something you work at. It is obvious to see were Gatsby could have been influenced socially, culturally or religiously. It's through good judgment, good choices, honesty and moral freedom that he found success. As for Gatsby's vision of the American dream, he has failed to attain that glamorous dream. Therefore, I conclude with one last word of wisdom, live in morally just integrity, assuming responsibilities that will bring forth success when in accordance with an existentialist point of view.
