The author of The Lesson, Toni Cade Bambara, was born

Miltona Mirkin Cade in 1 in Harlem. Bambara lived in

Harlem her first ten years. Around kindergarten, she

changed her name to 'Toni". Received her B.A. in Theater

Arts/ English at Queens College and later her master's

degree. Bambara was a consisted civil rights activist

and very politically and culturally involved in

African-American life. One of the best representatives

of black writers who emerged in the 160s. She gives

much credit to the Harlem community for significant

influence on her writing. Much of her writing centers on

black women, especially as they confront experiences

that force them to new awareness. Even though Toni Cade

Bambara passed away of cancer in 15, she is remembered

by her most noted works of short stories such as

Gorilla, My Love, The Birds Are Still Alive, and her

novel The Salt Eaters.

Bambara's use of language in her short story The Lesson

has urban slang and profanity. In the beginning of the

story, I was a little thrown off because I didn't

understand what was going on. The narrator, Sylvia, was

talking about random things that goes on in her

neighborhood. You can get the idea that she lives in an

urban environment of something like the projects, when

she says, "...the winos who cluttered up our parks and

pissed on our handball walls and stank up our

hallways...". Just from hearing that, you get the idea

of seeing an image of a ghetto.

Although Sylvia was an unreliable narrator, you can

see how the story begins to come along. As the narrator,

Sylvia informs the reader of her class trip to the world

famous toy store F.A.O. Schwartz. When the class arrives

at the toy store, I wasn't sure where they were. You see

the students speak of random objects that are expensive

such as a $00 microscope, a $480 paperweight made of

semi-precious stones, and a $1,15 fiberglass sailboat.

My first impression was that they were at a museum gift

store, because they carry some expensive items and it

seem like a typical place to go for a trip in New York

City.

I believe that Sylvia was an unreliable narrator. She

could of made improvements as far as her negative

attitude towards just about everything and everyone. She

didn't have to call FlyBoy a "faggot". I didn't

understand why she didn't like Miss Moore, whom was

trying to teach everyone a lesson in which Sylvia

ignored. I believe that deep down inside she wanted to

speak up and tell Miss Moore how she really felt and

what she thought about the trip. Sylvia's only problem

was her negativity.

Sylvia never mentioned what everyone else thought of

the trip. She only told what she thought was right to

tell. Sylvia was very impolite to everyone like she was

a bully. She was very discourteous because she never

gave back Miss Moore's change from the taxi and also

didn't give the taxi driver a good tip. Overall, Sylvia

was ill-mannered, discourteous, and extremely impolite

which made her a very unreliable narrator.

The whole point of the story was to learn a lesson from

the trip to F.A.O. Schwartz toy store. The lesson was

that you have to work hard to get the things that you

actually want. You have to realize at the same time that

all the money that you may spend on a certain item can

feed some seven to eight people in a single house. You

have to think wisely before purchasing something that is

expensive when you can get the same item for not as

much. Obviously, Sylvia ignored learning the lesson in

which she should of paid attention to. I think that

everyone learned the lesson, but we didn't hear them

because Sylvia didn't want to mention it.
