Grief, hills, eternity

Nor this behooveth me.

There are, that resting, rise.

Can I expound the skies?

How still the riddle lies!

This is the poem I selected from Emily Dickinson to do my essay on. Emily Dickinson isn't my favorite author. I don't particularly care for her work, however, this poem attracted me somehow. I know Emily Dickinson loved nature, and often wrote about them. She also wrote about death, religion, and immortality. In this poem she somewhat combines them.

The first stanza is saying things that don't stick around and dwell on their problems, usually have no elegy. This leads me to believe that since birds and bumblebees are so carefree, they don't worry about death. Birds and bumblebees seem to never die, because they are here, then they're there, and are always living like they should, without a care in the world. I think if we al tried to be like that, we would have such a better life. If we didn't care about your weight, clothes, or if we look weird, a lot of stress would be taken off everyone.

The second stanza is somewhat of the contrast of the first. This is saying that, if we dwell on the sad things in life, and we dwell on the past, that we're going to not have a great life. The last line of that stanza, "Nor this behooveth me", she's saying that dwelling on the bad stuff in life doesn't seem necessary to her. I agree with this statement, because everything on this earth is temporary. One day it will all be washed away, so we need not to dwell on the bad, but to turn our eyes and look to the good.

The last stanza wraps it all up very nicely. She is saying that, the ones who are resting, or the ones that are dead, rise up. The next lines she asks if she can explain the skies, meaning the heavens. She's saying that she can't explain heaven because she doesn't know about them. Emily questioned religion a lot, so this is very fitting. The last line, "How still the riddle lies!" I believe she is saying that, no one can really explain heaven, or God, so the riddle of it all will remain unsolved.

Emily Dickinson was a very talented your lady. She wrote poems on the back or receipts, newspapers, anything. Though she is not my favorite poet, I have a lot of respect for her. Many people would say she was a dark, gothic type person who didn't like people, but I've learned she wasn't like that. From the video we watched in class, I learned she had a type of anxiety disorder, so she couldn't really be around people she didn't know very well. Though she had that disorder, I believe she tried to make up for the rumors that might have been spread by being nice to the children. She would often bake, and then send it down in the basket to the children who were playing.

I somewhat feel sorry for Emily as well. There are two reasons I feel sorry for her. First, she had an anxiety disorder so she wasn't comfortable with people and she never went outside. I believe if she didn't have that, then she probably would've made a huge impact on the world. Second, is that her poems were published. She told her sister that after she died, she wished no one to read her poems. However, he sister published them and they were sent out to the world. I think it's sad that we read her poems and are not respecting Emily Dickinson's dieing wish.

Learning about Emily Dickinson in class has taught me a lot about her. My opinion has been totally changed on her as a person. I think she was a wonderful person (from what I know about her) and I hope in the future I can learn even more about her. Wherever you are, Emily, we all love you and are enjoying your work. I'm sorry that your wish was not granted, but since it wasn't, you are respected and loved everywhere.
