One of William Faulkner's most famous stories is "A Rose for Emily," the story of a woman who represents the Old South to the people who live in her town. However, Emily, who is revered as a symbol of the past by the townsfolk, also has a dark side, and Faulkner uses her to develop one of his more common themes, that the past was not as glorious as we would like to think it was. In this story, Emily denies the passage of time and holds on to the past in spite of the consequences of denying the present. Faulkner uses many symbols in the story to develop his theme. Some, like the decay of the house or the watch hidden in Emily's waistband, show the passage of time. Others, like Emily's statement that the aldermen should "[s]ee Colonel Sartoris" about her taxes, show that she denies reality because, as the narrator points out, "Colonel Sartoris has been dead almost ten years" when Emily makes her request (56). Faulkner also develops his theme through the symbolic use of colors. We usually associate the color gold with wealth. However, in this story, the term gold is often associated with the word "tarnished" a portrait in Emily's house is on a "tarnished gilt easel," and Emily leans "on an ebony cane with a tarnished gold head" (55). By associating "tarnished" with gold, Faulkner is symbolically telling the reader that Emily's wealth has decayed, is no longer as bright as it had once been. The color gray appears in the story several times and is associated with the Confederacy and the Old South. Emily was born in the antebellum South and clearly represents that to the townsfolk as some of the "very old men" illustrate as they come to Emily's wake "in their brushed Confederate uniforms" (60). Emily's hair is described as growing "grayer and grayer until it attained an even pepper-and-salt-iron gray, when it ceased turning" (5). Emily's iron-gray hair, combines the endurance and strength of iron with the Confederacy; in Emily, the Confederacy endures (although, of course, iron rusts or corrodes, as Emily does in the story). Finally, Faulkner shows the difference between the older, Confederate, generation and the younger generation when he has the narrator refer to the "graybeards" who meet to discuss the smell in Emily's house. They are from an older generation and are concerned about not offending Emily while "one younger man, a member of the rising generation" opposes them and wants to confront Emily (56). Finally, the color rose itself is evident in the "valance curtains of faded rose color" and the "rose-shaded lights" in Emily's secret room (60). We've all heard the expression "to see the world through rose-colored glasses" and know what it means to see the world unrealistically, the way we want to rather than the way it is. This is precisely how Emily wants to see the world in her room, the room that contained the remains of Homer, the Northerner, the man she loved, the man she killed, the man she couldn't let go. Faulkner's symbols are key to understanding that "A Rose for Emily" is more that just another ghoulish story. The symbols are integrated, as this brief examination of the use of some of the color symbols in the story shows, to create a complex portrait of a woman who is trapped in the past.
