ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES REFLECTIVE WRITING TASK

Silent tears were rolling down my cheek as the familiar landscape that I've become accustomed to my whole life slowly began fading away as the airplane began ascending into clouds of willowy blue cotton. I look beside me where my mum was sitting and her presence was of a comfort to me regardless of how little it was because I have never been close to my family members at all and am closer to my friends. Nevertheless, it was a consolation on it's own.

During the 6-hour flight, I tossed and turned in my seat trying to get comfortable but that proved to be easier said than done as I knew deep down inside of me that I would never be comfortable anywhere else other than home sweet home. After finally settling down, I tried to catch a few snoozes but my mind would never completely shut down as recurring memories of the bad and good times I had from the time I made my entrance into this world to the present began flashing through my mind continuously. Silent tears began rolling down my cheek again as I thought about all that I was leaving behind to go to a foreign place to pursue my tertiary education. I knew that my mum was aware of my quiet tears but she didn't say anything because she herself knew was I was going through and I was silently thankful for that.

As my plane slowly descended from the skies of Adelaide, the feeling of total loneliness once again magnified itself as I stared at a country that was totally foreign to me. Reality finally hit me. Here I was, a foreign girl in a totally foreign country about to socialize with other foreign people. Uncertainty began to unfurl it's ugly head inside me, I seriously had some doubts as to whether or not I would able to survive and to excel in unfamiliar territories where I have to start my whole life again from scratch. I felt as if I carried the whole world on my shoulders and there were butterflies in my stomach as I descended from the plane and took my first steps towards Adelaide International Airport. I shook my head vehemently to clear this unwanted thoughts and reminded myself that it was my choice to come here and I would prove to everyone back home than I could live independently and surpass everyone's expectations. With this resolution in mind, my steps became lighter and I was actually looking forward to seeing my new residence and to meet the people who would become my family over here, but still, a niggling feeling of misery and lonesomeness was ever present in myself. Would I be able to make it?

Now, two months later, reflecting back on my feelings then automatically puts a silly smile on my face. How silly could I be to think that I would be an outcast and a failure over here? I know I have good social skills and that has been proven when I've managed to be acquainted with some truly wonderful people who have made me feel right at home in this foreign country which now seems not so scary anymore. I've managed to hit it off with a few students who have proven time and time again to help me in my studies and emotional dilemmas, specifically two truly wonderful, fun-loving and fantastic girls, who despite us coming from different backgrounds have managed to hit it of and now become as close as sisters could be. Even the lecturers here are helpful and friendly as can be, differing greatly from the teachers back home who seem dull and patronizing in contrast.

Adelaide itself is a truly suitable and peaceful place for a study environment, which is good because the main reason I am here, is to study and prove that I can excel academically to make up for all my past mistakes. The university campus here is truly amazing and the libraries are very impressing. The streets and clubs here are nothing new but the only thing lacking in comparison to back home is the shops around here that consistently closes at the magic hour of five everyday which has proven to be quite a conflict and would need some adjusting to. My social life over here has been just wonderful and through my network of acquaintances, I have managed to acquire an unwavering and fulfilling emotional stability in this country.

In my belief, a stable emotional and social life would produce stable academic achievement, as there would always be someone to help you when you are uncertain about your studies. At Bradford, I initially started off with 6 subjects, namely Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths Studies, Critical Thinking and English for Academic Purposes. I then proceeded to take on an additional subject which is Specialist Maths as in my belief all these subjects would greatly help me to gain university entry easily. Then came the dilemma, I was called into the office one day and was made to choose in no uncertain terms only five subjects and there were no exceptions as this was the college policy. I pondered and pondered for days as to which would be the right subjects to choose and which to drop. Finally, I ended up with Physics, Chemistry, Maths Studies, Critical Thinking and of course English for Academic Purposes.

Having made my final decision on my subjects, I had to come up with a contingency plan as to how I would be able to plan my time constructively. At first, the suggestion of a weekly planner seem to be a great help as it was easy to just plan your week in advance and make sure you stick rigidly to it. Unfortunately, as the days progressed, I discovered that the weekly planner wasn't really effective as there would always be an unexpected event or its just that I can't seem to be able to complete my work in the time I estimated it to be. I decided to get myself a student organizer and on a daily basis state down the tasks I want to be completing on that particular day. This has proven to be a success compared to the weekly planner as I am now more organized and I know specifically what I have to achieve every day. I still do make a weekly planner for every week, as backup but my student organizer will always be my primary source of time management.

So far, I have been able to achieve the goals that I've set for myself. I came here to prove to everybody that I will excel academically away from home and I've managed to just achieve that. Though, my grades are not worth to be strutted around, I am actually quite satisfied with the marks from my assignments and tests that I've sat for and that is achieving 80% and above for most of them with few very minor exceptions. That doesn't mean, however that I'm not having problems with my subjects.

I'm planning to gain entry into medicine school once I've completed my foundation course and to be able to do that I've got to manage my studies extremely well here. I find that I haven't been doing enough work here to cover the topics I'm unsure of. Instead, I find myself only completing the assignments and homework given to me, studying only before tests and I'm always procrastinating when it comes to additional homework. I know I have to clean up my act soon and start doing extra work because med school is a tough place to get into and only through severe perseverance and diligence would a candidate be able to surpass others. I have to do more than what I'm doing now if I hope to achieve that and I'm thinking to start doing that by the coming holiday break. I definitely will try to come up with ways on how to push my potential to its maximum capability as I now live according to the motto, " Success is my only option and failure is not." I do not want history repeating itself as this was really my second chance to study and I am really going to push my potential to it's maximum competence to prove that I can do it. I am not going to plunge to the bottom again.

However my induced motivation has been totally the opposite when it comes to punctuality for my classes. I have never been a stickler for punctuality and not I find that I am mostly late for all my classes and I'm hoping to change that by next term. This will become a very major issue if I don't start getting on time for classes soon because the lecturers will get very cross whenever someone interrupts their lessons consistently.

Good and bad things always come in pairs. The best thing that have happened to me since the beginning of the term is that I have been able to meet some truly wonderful and special people who have made me feel right at home in unfamiliar waters. In addition, the lecturers over here are very friendly and helpful as well and that has been an extra bonus for me. They are very open-minded and always encourage the students to approach them if we have difficulty in class. The workload they set are reasonable and we're given a sufficient amount of time to complete them. The worst thing that have happened to me are the occasional times when I do not achieve 80% and above on my assignments and test and there was even a time that I was accused to be a cheater but I'm hoping to clear that up as soon as possible. Other than that, life over here has been nothing but a breeze and I'm happy as a lark just to be here among truly wonderful people who are working towards the same goal as me.

I've enjoyed the study program at Bradford College so far. I find the program relaxing but the lecturers very well cover the subjects. The method of learning here is also quite enjoyable. The lecturers are fun and they know when to lighten the atmosphere where the study tension gets too stressful in class. They also assign lots of homework after each subjects taught but they often give us sufficient time to complete it. The deadlines for assignments are flexible and reasonable too. My favourite subjects are Maths Studies and English. I haven't been having a lot of problems with my favourable subjects but instead I find that I'm having problems understanding Physics and Chemistry particularly Physics and I must get help on that soon.

My study habits over here have been totally erratic. I find myself being lethargic most of the time and I would always sleep first and get up at different times of the night to complete my homework. Even though, so far, all my homework has been completed on time, I find this study habit truly stressful and I'm hoping to come up with a stable study habit by next term where I will be able to complete my homework before time and not leave it to last-minute work.

My spare time has been spent doing work that has nothing in connection at all with my studies. I find myself cleaning up my apartment more often than normal as the place gets messy very easily as people just keep on coming and going at all times of the day. I have also been going to a lot of clubs lately during the weekends, which I'm not sure is a bad or good thing depending on how and who is viewing it.

In conclusion, the first term at Bradford has been very good after all and has surpassed all my initial expectations. I have experienced numerous things in my short term here and many personal changes as well. I'm looking forward towards a more productive term next semester. I hope that I would able to do more constructive things with my time and produce better results that what I am achieving now. My goal is to do better than others and I truly intend to maximize my potential to achieve that. As said previously "Success is my only option and failure is not.'
