Picture children playing in a playground; "Ha ha I'm right! No you're not, I'm right! No I am!" Sounds innocent enough doesn't it? After all we've all heard it before, and many of us have even said it. But the truth is that this is the beginning of egocentrism; a very nasty habit that consumes the ignorant. Egocentricity means to believe yourself and your ideas while taking little to no consideration of the thoughts of others. This behavior comes naturally to humans as we are set in our ways ignoring our flaws in thinking and presuming that we are right. When we use egocentric ideas in a group it becomes sociocentric. To Kill a Mockingbird is one novel in particular that shows many examples of this behavior as it has dug deep into the roots of the town. The book focuses on Scout, the main character. Scout develops her own perception and gains valuable insight of her egocentric behaviors and the sociocentric behaviors of her town by being inquisitive and being open-minded.

Being an eight-year-old tomboy, Scout doesn't mind telling people what is on her mind. As a result of her openness, she tends to be quite egocentric at times. Throughout the novel Scout demonstrates this behavior on many occasions as she develops a new understanding with every experience.

When Walter Cunningham is invited over to the Finch's for dinner Scout watches in complete and utter shock as he pours syrup over his entire plate. Scout asks Walter what in the world he is doing as Atticus tells Scout to be quiet. Scout quickly responds by shouting, But hes gone and drowned his dinner in syrup, hes poured it all over (4). In this scene Scout sees something that she thinks is completely outrageous so she acts out against Walter and criticizes his poor eating habits. Scout is unaware of her egocentric behavior until Calpurnia scorns her in the kitchen and tells her to hush up. She reminds Scout that Walter is a guest and he should be treated like one. Scout then realizes that Walter is just doing what he is used to since he is of a lower class.

Throughout the book Scout mentions Mrs. Dubose, a mean old lady confined to a wheel chair. On one afternoon as Scout and Jem pass by Mrs. Dubose's porch on their way into town Mrs. Dubose confronts them and calls their father, Atticus, a lawyer for niggers. She also goes on to say, "Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" (110). Later on that evening, on their way back from town Jem ravages Mrs. Dubose's garden along with her precious camellias. Jem is punished by Atticus and is told to read to Mrs. Dubose everyday after school. Scout accompanies him to the readings and sees grumpy Mrs. Dubose everyday. Scout wonders why Mrs. Dubose feels so much contempt towards herself, Jem, and Atticus. She doesn't think she has any right to be to mean. But soon after Mrs. Dubose passes on and Atticus reveals to her that Mrs. Dubose was addicted to morphine, and that she knew she was going to die the whole time. Then Scout finally understood Mrs. Dubose's wrath towards others.

When groups of people form sociocentric beliefs they become a powerful force to deal with. Since people tend to stay with a group and avoid straying away and becoming outcasts these ideas or beliefs can be very influential. It is easy to see how one could become part of a sociocentric group, just as many have in the town of Maycomb.

Tom Robinson was a victim of a town's prejudice. He was being charged and put on trial for a crime that he did not commit. Atticus was the only pure hearted man to defend Tom Robinson. On one evening in particular Atticus was put to the test when a mob gathered outside of the courthouse with the intension of killing Tom Robinson in his sleep. Scout, Jem and Dill watched along the side as Atticus stood in front of the door and blocked the men from entering the courthouse. Scout burst through the center of the mob and began talking to Mr. Cunningham. But Mr. Cunningham looked away in shame, until Scout asked about his son Walter. Then Mr. Cunningham squatted down and said, "Ill tell him you said hey, little lady" (154). Then the mob cleared out. Scout had just come to a realization that she had just saved an innocent man from the evil grip of sociocentric mob.

Authur Radley, yet another victim of the town's sociocentricity and rumors. Authur is subjected to a horrible nickname of Boo Radley because he chooses to live a reclusive life. Throughout the story Authur has become an important character who is dreadfully misunderstood. Townspeople, especially Stefanie Crawford, have gone on and made a living by making up stories and spreading rumors of the mistreated dweller of the Radley home. Arthur is forced to be and outsider because of the rumors. With each day he is pushed further and further away from being a human because not a soul would go to the Radley place and attemp to make contact with him except for Scout, Jem and Dill. They tried to communicate with him and get him to come out. But when Bob Ewell attacked Jem and Scout luckily authur came to the rescue. That is when Scout finally took his hand and she understood now that he was human just like everyone else. He didn't deserve cruel punishment and ridicule that he received for years. Then Scout stood the steps of the Radley porch and said, "Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley porch was enough" (7). Everything was so clear now that she had allowed herself to understand, to see past everything, to go deeper and peer through the eyes of others.

Fair-mindedness is the ability to take all things into consideration. A fair-minded person is honest, mature, patient, responsible, and wise. People who are fair-minded can recognize valid points and they can see more than just right and wrong. It is important to have a fair-minded attitude to understand egocentricity and sociocentricity. To see the problem with egocentricity and sociocentricity you must be able to see a difference in right and wrong. Along with fair-mindedness Scout gains honesty, maturity, patients, responsibility, and wisdom. She gained valuable knowledge about life as well. Back in the playground, those children have a lot to learn.
